Regional Perinatal Intensive Care Centers Project (RPICC)

The Regional Perinatal Intensive Care Centers Project (RPICC) is a comprehensive statewide perinatal health care delivery system that is administered by Children's Medical Services in the Department of Health. The RPICC project provides obstetrical services to women identified as having a high-risk pregnancy and neonatal intensive care services to critically ill/low birth weight newborns.

In 1974, Sacred Heart Hospital implemented a computerized neonatal data system to collect limited data on newborns served in Florida's Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Centers. Since 1979, CMS has contracted with Maternal Child Health and Education Research and Data Center (MCHERDC), the Department of Pediatrics, University of Florida to develop, implement, and operate an integrated, comprehensive, computerized data-base management system to collect, summarize, and analyze data from all components of the RPICC Program: High Risk Obstetrical, High Risk Neonatal, and High Risk Obstetric Satellite Clinics.

In 2000, the RPICC data systems converted to an internet-based application utilizing encrypted transmission as well as both server- and user-level login-password protection. With only an internet connection, authorized personnel from each RPICC center have ready access to data entry and reporting.

RPICC Data Management and Reporting Goals:

Florida's RPICC Centers additionally use the internet-based RPICC Data Collection and Reporting System to submit claims for Medicaid reimbursement, including claims for Neonatal and Obstetrical Care Groups. Data collected by the RPICC Data System is used to perform longitudinal, outcome-based, performance measurements for program participants.
